Divas Ran! Divas Ran Fast!

A big Towanda thank you from the bottom of our bosoms to everyone who supported the 2nd annual Spicy Green Bean Run, Diva, Run! held on Sunday, April 15. It was a beautiful morning and nearly 300 walkers and runners came out to support the run hosted by the Glastonbury River Runners. Over $1200 was raised to support the Towanda Fund at ECHN which will provide mammograms to uninsured underserved women in our community. Thank you to all the sponsors who generously supported the event and to Sparkles the Clown who was on hand to do AMAZING face painting for the kids and to oversee the kids’ fun run.

A special shout out to all those who channeled their inner diva to dress the part which added so much to the festivities. We had runners and walkers in tutus, boas, a prom dress, and all kinds of bling! One of the prizes to our first place winner in the Diva Attire Contest received…are you ready….a box of GoDIVA chocolates!! Get it?? GoDiva? Godiva???? We LOVE that prize!

Dr. Elizabeth Brady will be our FUNdraiser speaker once again this year. (thanks, Beth!) In response to the overwhelmingly positive feedback we received after the last FUNdraiser,

DR. BRADY WILL GIVE HER BRIEF TALK TO ATTENDEES DURING THE HEALTH FAIR AT 6:30 PM. THIS IS THE ONLY TIME SHE IS SCHEDULED TO GIVE THIS TALK. NO OTHER SPEAKERS ARE SCHEDULED FOR LATER IN THE EVENING.

Some attendees were very disappointed to learn they had missed her presentation when they arrived after her talk last year. FYI, Dr. Brady’s presentation this year is going be a ‘show and tell’ and promises to be very ‘hands on’. It is definitely not to be missed!

We have a tremendous line up of docs, nurses, and other medical professionals to answer your questions on breast health, urology, radiation oncology, mobile mammography, cancer survivorship resources, ovarian cancer, integrative medicine, smoking cessation, medical benefits of yoga, nutrition, diabetes, sleep disorders, and more! This is an incredible opportunity for one on one discussions and answers to all those questions you’d want to ask if this doc was seated next to you at a dinner party! They can clarify things you’ve heard in the news, direct you where to find information you need, answer general interest questions (by the way, this is not a good time for a personal medical consultation), or tell you what’s new in their field of expertise and why it’s important to you. Volunteers are not paid
-- not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless.


Thank you to all who completed the volunteer sign up portion of the ticket order form. You will be contacted soon to confirm when and where you will volunteer at the event. Did you forget to fill it in? No problem! We still have a few one hour volunteer slots to fill.

Please contact Monica and Chris to let them know which hour you would like to volunteer during the event. We ask each attendee to please volunteer even just one hour at the event or at set up or clean up. This spreads the work over many hands and allows everyone time to enjoy the party!

If we don’t get enough volunteers, it means we have to ask some girlfriends to work more than one shift. Icky. This event is a total pitch in and everybody helps a little bit event. You know, like a family holiday. You don’t want to be the one who always decides she needs a walk when it’s time to do the dishes. (I can hear you nodding your head. You know who I mean.. every extended family has one!)

Creative Bra Contest


We stole a few peeks at some of the entries for the creative bra contest and they are great! Channel your inner artist and just go with it! Can’t think of a good idea? Call the friend who always has the best costume at Halloween. She’ll have an idea for you. We have prizes, of course. We just LOVE presents.

Going once… going twice…


As of the last count, Ellen the ticket mistress didn’t need all her fingers and toes to count up the number of tickets left. The good news is that we are just about at capacity. The other good news is we didn’t have to turn anyone away this year. Moving the event to April definitely shook things up a bit, but in a good way. It looks like a LOT of Party Virgins this year. We can’t wait to meet you! If you haven’t done so already, get your hands on a copy of The Charge of the Casserole Cookbook- The Official Towanda Cookbook. Reading the amazing story of how Towanda was created ahead of time will increase your enjoyment of the FUNdraiser ten fold! Tea Cup Raffle


All the generous donations have been collected, sorted, packaged and tied up with a bow! Once again, Lynne, our raffle fairy has worked her magic and they are spectacular! New this year: detailed descriptions of all items are available on our website for you to preview! Click here!

Our goal is to reduce the lines for girlfriends waiting to see what we have this year. By having the chance to read the descriptions ahead of time, the lines should move faster and free you up for dancing and catching up with new and old friends!

Now let’s talk about the FUNDraising


The event is a blast, but it’s important that none of us lose sight of the fact that it isn’t just about having a party. It IS a fundraiser for a very important cause. Breast self exams and mammograms are essential to the early detection of breast cancer and EARLY DETECTION SAVES LIVES.

If you are a Party Virgin (new attendee), you may not realize that your ticket price only covers the cost of hosting the event. After paying for rentals, insurance, paper goods, postage, decorations, food, drink, printing, survivor sashes, dj, and on and on….. we don’t make any money on the tickets. Our philosophy has always been to keep ticket price as low as possible in order to include girlfriends from a wide range of income levels.

Not everyone has a lot of cash to spend once she gets in the door, but everyone must understand that the FUNDraising part of the evening is achieved by being as generous as you can once you get here. Those that can are encouraged to buy raffle tickets, tip the bar generously, fully enjoy the boob cake dance, and to “Shop ‘til they Drop” at the TTF Boobtique.

If you can’t spend big this year, you can still contribute to the enormous amount of positive energy in the room! Maybe your contribution will be finding someone in the room who looks like she’s ready to meet some new friends and invite her over to meet your girlfriends. Maybe you’ll put some extra energy into the creative bra contest that will put a smile on someone’s face! Each of us does what she can, when she can. We’ve given this a lot of thought over the years and we believe this to be the best way to level the playing field among this incredibly diverse group of women. So please think about it. Maybe give up a latte or two between now and the FUNDraiser and plan to spend it then. Thanks!
