Does Towanda use our donations to pay for anything besides mammograms?
92 Days Until the BEST Party of the Year!
Great question! The answer is “Youbetcha”!
Our EBlasts are going to highlight one of the TTF projects to show you exactly how your donations are being used to make a difference in the community.
This month’s topic is Towanda Totes.
Towanda Totes are swanky canvas bags full of basic post surgery self care products for uninsured lumpectomy patients at Hartford Hospital, Rockville Hospital, and Manchester Memorial. The bags include useful items such as thermometers, cold packs, extra bandages, drug store gift cards, and undershirts for the first weeks after surgery. Each recipient also receives a copy of The Charge of the Casserole Cavalry, The Official Towanda Cookbook, and a good supply of ‘nurse bait’, aka “Chocolate”. The bags were developed with input from a focus group of clinic patients. One participant suggested we include a small hand mirror “because the only way I can see my incision is to stand on a chair in front of the medicine cabinet.” There’s a whole other world out there that most of us can’t even begin to imagine.
TTF also donates a copy of The Charge of the Casserole Cavalry to the bags that the Partnership for Breast Care prepares for every mastectomy patient at Hartford Hospital.
There is a pink glow on the horizon that can only mean the TTF FUNdraiser is heating up! The excitement is starting to build: invitations are stamped and ready to go, auction items are slowly starting to come in, tee shirts are being
ordered, the engineering of entries to the creative bra contest are a hot topic of conversation, and out of town girlfriends are calling to make arrangements to stay the weekend! Yippee! Pretty soon all the girlfriends we love best in the world will be in one place and we can dance, and laugh, and catch up as we all Celebrate EVERYTHING!
Invitations will be mailed in late February. Thank you SO much to all of you who opted to receive an invitation by email. This saves a lot of work and a lot of money. If you plan to bring Party Virgins with you this year, the first thing you need to do is go to here right now to add their names to the Eblast list. We never ever EVER share our mailing list with anyone, so no worries there. Pinky Swear!
Our most immediate concern right now is Tea Cup Auction Items…..or rather, the LACK of tea cup auction items.
Moving the FUNdraiser to April added a wrinkle to our solicitation efforts. We’re hoping all our Friends of Towanda were just waiting until after the holidays to donate items, but guess what? The time is now!
In this economic climate, we understand that individuals may not be in a position to make the donations they have in the past, but donations of any size are greatly appreciated. We have very talented people standing by to group them into packages and make them look beautiful.
So please contact Jill Smachetti, 2012 FUNdraiser Committee Chair at (860) 604-6433 or email her at firstname.lastname@example.org for more info or for local pick up arrangements. We are depending on all the friends of Towanda to help make the tea cup auction the success it has always been in the past. If you have a connection to a business that might be able to donate, please contact Jill for a solicitation letter. We will showcase items on our website prior to the FUNdraiser.
To ensure your donation is included in this event and that your generosity is properly acknowledged in pre-event publicity, we request receipt of all items by February 29, 2012. Thank you!
Run, Diva, RUN!
The Glastonbury River Runners is hosting the 2nd annual Spicy Green Bean Deli Run, Diva, RUN! to benefit Team Towanda Foundation on April 15th. This family friendly event includes a 5K road race / 2-mile walk / 1/4-mile Kids’ Fun Run. There are medals for all registered participants, tee shirts for the first 150, and Awards for top place finishers. Of course, because it’s a Diva Run and TTF has a hand in things, there are also prizes for the best costumes! Don’t you just LOVE presents?? So channel your inner diva and get your friends together
to register here.
Become a sponsor of the 2012 FUNdraiser and not only help a great cause, but your company will also experience the amazing power of girlfriend power as we help you to ‘connect the dots’ among thousands of new friends.
The FUNdraiser is attended by more than 500 women from all over Connecticut and a surprising number of friends from out of state. We have over 1000 Facebook and Twitter followers who regularly share news from our pages. We host dozens of top clinicians and professionals in the medical field at our Health Fair and a huge range of careers, age groups, and demographics are represented among our attendees. Everyone there is fun, smart, and a friend of Towanda.
This event usually sells out very quickly and we send out Eblasts at least every two weeks prior to the big night! How cool would it be to let everyone know that YOUR BUSINESS is a friend of Towanda? Check out the sponsorship
packages and the a la carte menu here!
Another idea: got lots of friends who LOVE the FUNdraiser, LOVE to dance, and want to do more to help? Got a very special Pink Ribbon Warrior you want to celebrate?? Why not get a group together to sponsor the music or imprinted
party favors?? The possibilities are limitless!
Advocate Best of Hartford Readers’ Poll 2012
Want to help spread the word about Team Towanda but don’t have time or money? Do you have about 30 seconds? You’re already online anyway.
Please vote in the Advocate Best of Readers’ Poll 2012 to vote for your favorite local charity.
On the home page, select the “People and Places" category on the left. Then go to the 3rd item down, “Favorite Local Charity”. Don’t see your fave on the drop down list? Well, you can select “Write in a new choice” and add one!
We suggest you pick one that is a 100% volunteer operation run from somebody’s kitchen table, has donated over $200,000 to the Greater Hartford Community, focuses on providing mammograms and breast services to uninsured, underserved women, and has a proven track record of connecting the dots between its supporters resulting in a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. We’re not telling anybody what to do, mind you. We’re just sayin'……
Meet Our Team Players
Each month we will introduce you to one member of the Team Towanda Executive Board. We don’t always get to meet everyone at events and the FUNdraiser, so we thought we’d help you put some faces with the names in our Eblasts.
Debbie "Flex Chick" Garten
Executive Director 2012
Board Member since 2003
Deb can best be described as “The Woman Behind the Curtain” like the professor in The Wizard of Oz. Every Towanda event always includes a lot of sparkle, laughs, and great gatherings of very fun friends, but as most women know, it’s
the people behind the scenes who are often directly responsible for making things work.
So organized it’s kind of scary, Deb handles many of the administrative responsibilities of TTF and Co-Chairs the TTF FUNdraisers. By ‘co-chair’ we mean Judith gets up and does all the talking and Deb tells her what to say and
when to say it.
She also coordinates the Towanda Tote program for three hospitals, maintains the three Towanda Cheer Carts for chemotherapy patients, oversees the management of our college intern, and is currently completing the development
of the TTF Media Press Kits.
You can't be brave if you've only had wonderful things happen to you.

Wishing you the Breast -
